Meet The Nominees

Vice-President Communications

Dean Cowell

This is to submit my Declaration of Interest for the role of VP Communications at the SGM on July 26.

Mustafa Karacam

My name is Mustafa Karacam, and I am running for the position of Vice President, Communications with the Toronto Spartan Volleyball League (TSVL). I believe my background in sport and academia, coupled with my experience in event organizing and community engagement, makes me a strong candidate for this role.

I bring over twenty years of experience in sport (archery)—as a professional athlete, coach, and event organizer. This journey has equipped me with excellent interpersonal communication skills. As an athlete, I collaborated with numerous teammates and coaches, learning the importance of clear, respectful communication. As a senior athlete overseeing junior members, I often acted as a bridge between coaches and younger athletes, helping to relay training plans and gather feedback.

As a coach, I regularly communicated with athletes, parents, suppliers, and stakeholders. To maintain
efficient communication, I implemented tools like WhatsApp, creating different group chats tailored
to skill levels and availability.

Academically, I hold a BA in Physical Education and Teaching, and a PhD in Kinesiology and Health Studies with a focus on gender and sexuality in sport. My pedagogical training has shaped my communication style—clear, inclusive, and audience-aware. During my graduate studies, I honed my oral and written communication skills while working with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Between 2019 and 2021, I served as Graduate Student Representative — an elect position, for the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport
(NASSS), the largest organization for sport sociology in North America. I created and distributed promotional emails, developed surveys, and solicited feedback to help shape annual conferences.

Currently, I work as Lead, Research and Partner Management for one of the largest cohort studies
in North America. In this role, I serve as the primary point of contact, representing the Director and team in communications with researchers, clinicians, community partners, and stakeholders. My responsibilities include coordinating meetings, ensuring proper recording and maintenance of minutes, preparing newsletters, maintaining our website, managing confidential documents, and ensuring our work aligns with ethics and organizational by-laws. This role requires meticulous
organization and exceptional communication skills, which I bring to everything I do.

On a personal note, I joined TSVL in Fall 2024 and immediately felt welcomed by the community. I
believe this is a reflection of both the inclusive spirit of TSVL and my approachable and collaborative nature.
I am passionate about contributing to the ongoing success of TSVL and giving back to a community
that has already given me so much. I am excited about the opportunity to work closely with the President and the rest of the Board to uphold our values and help carry forward the league’s proud legacy. I believe my background and qualifications outlined above makes me a strong candidate for this role.

Thank you for your consideration.

Kevin Ludena

I am writing to formally express my interest in the position of Vice President, Communications on the TSVL Board.

As a CPA and Senior Manager with experience at esteemed consulting firms, I have developed a strong understanding of the importance of clear, strategic, and timely communication in driving organizational success. In my role, I manage communication across diverse stakeholder groups, including clients, cross-functional teams, and senior leadership, ensuring alignment, clarity, and trust at every level. Additionally, I serve on my firm’s Social Committee and Real Estate Strategy Development Team, where I have further honed my leadership skills and cultivated a commitment to inclusive and forward-thinking communication.

I am enthusiastic about bringing my practical experience and leadership to support the Board’s communication goals and to contribute to building on TSVL’s proud legacy.

Thank you for your consideration.

Vice-President Sponsorship

Enrique Maldonado Hernández

I’m writing to formally express my interest in the role of VP of Sponsorship on the TSVL Board. As a proud member of the league and a firm believer in the power of inclusive sport, I’m excited by the opportunity to help strengthen the community that has given so much to so many.

With over eight years of experience in digital marketing and stakeholder engagement, I bring a strong background in building partnerships, developing integrated campaigns, and managing high-impact initiatives. In my current role as Manager of Engagement in Retail Customer Growth at Scotiabank, I lead multi-channel strategies that drive performance and long-term value—skills I believe would translate well to expanding TSVL’s sponsorship portfolio and visibility.

What draws me most to this role is TSVL’s mission of fostering connection, joy, and diversity in Toronto’s LGBTQ+ community. As a team captain in the league, I’ve seen firsthand the impact this organization has on its members. I would be honoured to contribute to its continued success by helping secure meaningful sponsorships that reflect TSVL’s values and future vision.

Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how I can support the Board and help advance TSVL’s goals.

Aidan Messom

2025.07.12 - Aidan Messom

About Me
After playing in TSVL for three years I am excited for the opportunity to give back! I have grown to love this
organization and its members, and I know I have the right skills and experience to turn the sponsorship position into an important driver of TSVL’s continued success. I intend to bring a collaborative attitude, fresh ideas, and a smile to the board!

A short summary of my relevant experience for this position:

  • Working as a manager in a ‘big 4’ consulting firm:
    • Pitching new projects to clients - understanding their needs and explaining how working with us can help them achieve their goals.
    • Drafting contracts describing the work we will perform for our clients, monitoring the project to ensure we fulfill our contractual obligations.
    • Invoicing clients and managing the financial side of our projects.
    • Cultivating client relationships to build trust and credibility over time.
  • Studied engineering, currently a licensed professional engineer (P.Eng).
  • Served as a director on the board of the Ryerson Engineering Student Society (also a non-profit) and sat on the finance subcommittee.

Overall, these experiences have taught me how to communicate with sponsors in a professional manner, articulate the value of working with TSVL, then negotiate and execute on our agreements with them. They have also given me a deep appreciation of the responsibility of signing officers to contribute to the good governance of the organization in line with our contracts, bylaws, and the Not-For-Profit Corporations Act.

My Vision for Sponsorship
I view sponsorship as the driving force that will allow us to continue to grow the league and continue offering more to our members. To me this includes applying for other sources of funding such as grants and establishing
partnerships with other organizations who’s goals align with ours.

Sponsorship is deeply intertwined with all aspects of TSVL, from operations, to finance, to long term strategy. I intend to set up rigorous processes to ensure sponsorship is well integrated with other teams. Most importantly though, I intend to build a strong sponsorship committee to involve more members in this work and achieve more together than I could alone!
