The competitive league is an extension of the main TSVL recreational league. It provides players with the opportunity to compete at a higher level and to train for tournaments.
TSVL's competitive league had 4 teams throughout the 1990s, but started annually expanding in 2000. In the 2006-2007 season the competitive league will have 32 teams. For the OutGames in Montréal and the Gay Games in Chicago in the summer of 2006, TSVL members fielded 14 indoor teams which won a total of 4 medals in their respective divisions, 6 beach teams which won gold and bronze and 4th place, and several beach pairs.
Almost 90 percent of TSVL's competitive players originally came through TSVL's Rec League and many still play in the Rec League, offering guidance to developing players. Competitive players also act as clinicians to help develop the next generation of tournament players.
The competitive league is organized around complete teams. Individual registrations are not accepted; only complete teams are allowed to register. Spaces for new teams to come into the league depend on gym availability and prior renewals from existing teams.
The league runs from September to April with an innovative mixture of exciting pool play and more sociable round-robin cycles. Teams train for tournaments using our pool play format, and teams that may seldom meet in pool play get to meet and play each other during the more relaxed round-robin cycles. The league fine-tunes the balance between pool and round-robin play annually based on feedback from the teams.
TSVL's competitive league players socialize after play on Tuesday nights at a local restaurant.
As with the main Thursday league, the competitive league requires the help of several volunteers to run smoothly.Click here for a list of volunteer functions.
